1060 High carbon Steel – Functional Swords Facts

1060 Carbon Steel is known for its high carbon content. It is widely favored among sword makers for crafting Katanas due to its ability to become resilient when properly heat treated.
It possesses considerable toughness and maintains its edge quite well. This is why many inexpensive practice swords are made from this type of steel. A 1060 Carbon Steel Katana typically has a practical carbon content of 0.60%, which is the lowest among practical options.
To prevent rusting, manganese is added to the blade. However, it is important to note that 1060 Steel is not stainless and requires regular oiling and maintenance.
This steel strikes a good balance between hardness and flexibility. While other steels like 9260 Spring steel offer similar hardness, they may provide more flexibility in comparison.
