1060 Steel - Functional Swords Facts

1060 Carbon Steel is known for its high carbon content and is widely used in the production of functional swords. Its popularity among sword makers stems from its ability to become resilient when properly heat treated.
This steel is highly durable and maintains its edge quite well, which is why it is commonly used for affordable beater swords. The practical carbon content of a 1060 Carbon Steel katana is typically around 0.60%.
Manganese is added to prevent the blade from rusting, although it should be noted that 1060 Carbon Steel is not stainless and requires regular oiling and maintenance.
One of the notable qualities of this steel is its balanced combination of hardness and pliability. While other steels like 9260 Spring Steel offer similar levels of hardness, they also provide greater flexibility.
